Do I need a referral for MRI examination?
Magnetic resonance imaging under the contract with the NFZ can only be performed with a referral. Booking an appointment is possible after receiving a referral. A referral will also be required in the case of a medical package, e.g. LUXMED. Patients paying for the examination themselves do not need a referral.
How long does MRI examination take?
The examination time depends on the examined section and the protocol, and ranges from 15 to 60 minutes.
Is the examination painful?
No. An inconvenience for the patient may be the noise generated during the work of the scanner (partially muffled by music in dedicated headphones), the tight space in which the patient is being examined and the need to remain still during the examination. The possible contrast agent is administered intravenously.
When is a contrast agent administered during an examination?
Each time, the decision to administer a contrast agent is made by the radiologist supervising the examination, based on diagnostic indications, the patient’s medical history (the course of the patient’s illness), and the results of laboratory tests (including creatinine levels). The patient has the right to refuse the administration of a contrast agent, but in such cases the diagnostic value of the examination is significantly limited.
Is it possible to perform the examination under sedation / general anesthesia?
Yes, it is possible to perform MRI examination under general anaesthesia, after the doctor has confirmed that there are no contraindications to anesthesia.
Can you wear a bra on MRI?
No. For the examination, we recommend wearing comfortable clothes that do not contain metal elements such as zippers, metal buttons or a bra with metal wires.
What cannot be detected with MRI?
The MRI examination is not dedicated to the diagnosis of the lungs, due to their anatomical structure. Lung tissue consists of alveoli filled with air, which is not clearly visible on MRI. In this case, it is better to perform a CT scan.
How often can I have MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging is completely safe and neutral for the body, it can be performed on children and seniors as often as needed.
