November is a month dedicated to raising awareness about male cancers, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and other diseases affecting men. As part of the observance, numerous educational campaigns and events are organized to encourage men to take care of their health and undergo regular screenings. One of the key initiatives is “Movember,” which draws attention through the symbolic act of growing a mustache. This initiative aims not only to promote knowledge about male cancers but also to raise funds for research and support for those battling these diseases. Thus, November becomes a time to speak more openly about men’s health issues, encouraging them to actively care for their well-being and undergo regular check-ups.
The Increase in Diagnosed Cancer Cases
In men, prostate cancer affects 13% of the overall male population. In Poland, there has been an increase in the number of diagnosed cases of these cancers. According to data from the National Cancer Registry, in 2020, the most commonly diagnosed cancers among men in Poland were:
- Prostate cancer,
- Lung cancer,
- Colorectal cancer.
Despite the rising number of diagnosed cases, the death rate associated with these diseases is not showing an upward trend, thanks to increased public awareness, regular screening tests, and preventive campaigns.
Molecular PET/MR Imaging in Cancer Diagnosis
In the diagnosis of male cancers, including prostate cancer, the multimodal technique PET/MR is increasingly being used. This examination combines data obtained through positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MR), offering additional information that is not available in traditional imaging methods. In addition to the anatomical structures visible in MR and the metabolic changes detected by PET, PET/MR allows for the acquisition of information related to cellular density, tissue perfusion, and other biological parameters. Furthermore, this technique is characterized by better resolution in the assessment of pelvic tissues and a relatively low dose of ionizing radiation, making it particularly beneficial in the diagnosis of malignancies of the genital organs.
Recent reports, though still limited, suggest that the 68Ga-PSMA PET/MR technique has an advantage over 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT in the evaluation of patients with prostate cancer. The higher image quality and more precise localization of tumor foci make PET/MR a more advanced diagnostic method, especially in difficult-to-diagnose cases or during disease monitoring.
Neglect of Health by Men
Men, compared to women, are less likely to take care of their health. They typically visit a doctor only when pain symptoms occur, neglecting regular check-ups. Studies show that men are more likely than women to ignore symptoms of illness, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
Risk Factors and Main Causes of Poor Health
The main causes of poor health in men include stress, exhaustion, and cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Only 43% of men have consulted a cardiologist at least once in their lifetime. Visits to a urologist, particularly in the absence of symptoms, remain rare, which can hinder early diagnosis of cancers.
Barriers to Accessing Healthcare
Many men avoid urological exams due to fears of being diagnosed with serious conditions, such as prostate or bladder cancer. Data shows that about 36% of men refrain from seeing a specialist because of the fear of a potential diagnosis. Additionally, around 33% of men cite embarrassment and discomfort with the examination itself as significant barriers to accessing healthcare. This is understandable, as the intimate nature of these exams often causes anxiety and shame. However, it’s important to emphasize that ignoring health issues in this area can lead to serious health consequences, including early cancer diagnoses that can be effectively treated if detected on time.
At BioSkaner, we understand the importance of providing comfort and a sense of security to patients during examinations. Therefore, we ensure not only the highest standard of medical services but also full protection of personal data in compliance with GDPR regulations. Every patient visiting our facility can be assured that their data is fully protected and that the diagnostic process takes place in an atmosphere of respect and discretion.
It’s worth noting that the shame associated with urological exams affects many men, but it should not be a barrier to maintaining good health. At BioSkaner, we strive to create an atmosphere of understanding and discretion, so patients feel comfortable and confident. That’s why we encourage you to take advantage of our diagnostic services—remember, regular check-ups are key to preserving health and a long life.
